There can be many reasons for a slowdown of your computer. Programs don’t open as fast as they used to. Internet connection is slow and is driving you crazy. Pop-ups are everywhere and non stop open a new web pages. Your hard drive is buzzing and twittering every time when you open new window.
Here is few advices how you can fix your computer problems.
Viruses and Spyware
Run antivirus or antivirus online. Many times it is a good idea to run more than one to be sure that nothing is missed. Run antispyware and update if you already have it. Computer viruses and spywares can hide into your Windows and dramatically slow your computer’s functioning too. Spyware programs must be removed as soon as possible because they manipulate the windows system and memory settings. I recommend you run a virus and spyware scan to uncover every hidden malicious program in the background. It could be reason why is your computer slow. IMPORTANT: make sure it has the latest updated virus and spyware definitions.
Too many programs at start menu
Remove unnecessary items from the start menu. As you add programs to your Windows system, many programs automatically add themselves to start menu. It means they can run as Windows starts. These start-up programs steal away trace amounts of memory and processing time as your computer runs.
To do this click Start -> Run -> type ‘msconfig’ then press Enter and go to Startup tab. You will see a list of all the programs and processes that are located to run when your system loads. To remove them uncheck all of the programs that you do not need to load every time you start your computer. Don’t uncheck items that you do not recognize. Click Apply and then reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. This will make the computer start more quickly and efficiently.
Garbage named as a temporary files
If your hard drive is running out of space, the effectivity of your computer slows down dramatically. Remove any document, pictures, emails, movies, mp3, old programs that are no longer needed. Than run Disk Cleanup application: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. For faster browsing speed clear your Internet cache (temporary internet files) and delete your cookies. This causes the computer to gain speed on the Internet and the pop-ups from sites that you have been to will also be less frequent (Disk Cleanup can do it as well).
Defragmenting hard drive
When a file is fragmented, it takes longer for the computer to read it because it has to skip to different sections of the hard disk. Files on your computer can either be fragmented or unfragmented. It does this because as you save and delete files from your hard drive parts of them does not get saved next to one another. They are scattered about the disk. So defragmenting the drive takes all the clusters that belong to one file and put them next to one another. This make it run better because the hard drive simply has to seek to one place and read the file.
The defrag tool can be accessed by: Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Another way is go to My Computer -> choose once of your hard drive/partition -> right-click and go to Properties.
It can take several hours to properly defrag a hard drive. Files will be more quickly accessed and all of the bad sectors on a disk will not contain any information on them.
Registry
Every Microsoft Windows operating system has a registry. Your system registry holds a wealth of information about your computer. This is due in part to invalid entries that exist in your system registry, that might exist because of software you are no longer using or software that was not properly removed. By removing these invalid entries, you can significantly increase the performance of your computer. Registry is one of the most important files on your computer. Unfortunately, when you remove a program not all of the information in the registry is always removed and files might be left. That is why your computer slow down because it has to keep referring to the registry file in order to locate program files. Also many files are associated with them. The more programs you install and remove, the worse the problem gets.
More RAM
Upgrading your computer’s memory is one of the easiest, quickest and effective ways to boost performance. Usually new computers are delivered with only a minimum of memory installed. How it can help you?
- If you open several programs at the same time and switch between them frequently
- No matter how fast your Internet connection is, a memory upgrade can help your browser display pages faster
- More RAM supports color at higher resolutions and gives you the power for enhanced 3D rendering (computer games, photo and video editing)
- Applications respond much quicker
- A memory upgrade is essential for efficient networking
- Vista users perfectly know how much they need extra memory
Other problems
A gradual failure of internal hardware components is another common cause of a slow computer. These often show up in the form of slow boot and shut down. And other computer troubles which you may can’t recognize. For saving your money, time and nerves you can simply call me.

Hi,
My computer has ~50% of CPU usage when no programs are running. The problem seems cyclical–during the day usage goes up to 50 -68% and at night comes down to a few percent. No virus scan is running–my AVG runs at 1:00 am daily. My audio is crackly. I have a pentium 3 and Windows XP. My computer is about 2 years old. I just added more memory. I ran a defragment. Trendmicroonline froze up after it ran a free scan. What do you suggest/
Thanks,
Evelyn
