There are planty computer’s killers. Sometimes they are invisible, sometimes they act as your friend. Or they just live with us and we do not recognize them as enemies. It is really hard to say or advise when someone can not see your computer during the work. Therefore we will start from the beginning. I collected a few basic, useful steps. Common sense should be on the top of this list.
When PC does not want to start up:
- Start the computer again. Maybe you just need press the power button correctly.
- Check the power cable on the back of the computer and make sure it’s plugged in. Maybe you use power strip so check it out as well.
- Ensure if the computer is on (’beeping’, fan’s sound, power lights up - usually close to power button - can be good clue for you). If it is, the computer is working and the problem could be somewhere else.
- Look at other devices connected to the power strip if they work can be turned on. If nothing else works, the problem could be in the power strip.
- Monitor.
Make sure the monitor is on. Make sure the monitor’s settings are correct. (someone made a joke that way of one my client)
Check if the monitor is plugged into a good power outlet by switching wall sockets. If the power cable is not permanently attached to the monitor, make sure that it is fully inserted the back of the monitor. You can remove the monitor connector from the video card and check that none of the pins in the are bent over. - Maybe recently new hardware was added (e.g. printer, scanner, etc.) - try disconnect them and start computer again.
- If you do not afraid of more advanced solution I would suggest open the case. Then disconnect the hard drive(s) and try to turn it on. If still nothing has changed, disconnect any DVD/CD-ROM. Then check the RAM. Take it out, try insert into another slot (if you have more than one memory stick, remove all of them and then take one and try each of th e slots.)
What or who destroy your computer:
- Dusty environment(!)
- Dampness and heat in a room
- Unfortunately your pets can also bring about dust, dirt, debris
- Lightning strikes cause sometimes enormous electrical surges in a power and phone lines - unplug any power, phone or LAN cable during thunderstorms
- Poor quality power cords and surge protectors
- Old or second hand components/devices - sometimes they are just defective
- Smokers are definitely your computer enemies
- Carefree owner
- Defragmenting is part of Windows’ life, not your another unwanted duty.
- Windows updates exist from some reason as well.
- Useless software at Windows startup - sometimes there are viruses and worms.
- Unnecessary and temporary files steal place on your hard drive.
